“It’s too late for me. It’s too late for me to get involved with social media.”
I hear this disheartened statement quite often when I talk to people in the dental industry about social media. Sometimes it is from a dentist who is approaching retirement. Sometimes it is from a very busy and vital young practice’s office manager. It is almost always said with apologetic resignation as if there was no hope. And, after politely listening to them lament, here’s what I say…
It’s NEVER too late!!
Because it is not! And I know this because I speak from experience.
I became involved with social media over 4 years ago. I had a well established and successful dental business. I had no experience in marketing other than my feeble attempts at running promotional ads in local newspapers…with very little predictable success, I might add. Social media was relatively new and I was intrigued. I made mistakes and learned from them. I kept reading and learning and trying out new social media platforms and suggestions and it started to work. My practice became highly visible and respected in the social media community. I made connections that are still valuable to me today. So, even with 23 years of experience running a business under my belt, I found incredible value in incorporating social media as part of my marketing strategy. And, I’ve never looked back. Not once.
To the dentist who is looking to retire in a few years, I say, let’s get you set up with a digital presence. Let’s get you a website that is the virtual representation of your physical office. Let’s get you some fresh and relevant content that you can post on a regular basis to improve your SEO. Let’s get you on just one social media platform to start some engagement with people who are or who could be potential patients. Let’s set up a schedule that is easy and not too demanding to post content to your website and Facebook Page. Because, if you are looking to retire and sell your practice in a few years, who do you think a potential buyer is going to be more attracted to? The dentist that has done nothing to market and enhance his/her practice for potential growth or the dentist that has a digital infrastructure in place with active engagement and increased visibility?
To the very busy and vital dental business who feels that it’s too late to make any changes in the direction that they are heading, I say let’s review your marketing strategy. Let’s look at money that you may be spending on marketing strategies that are outdated or ineffective. Let’s look within your office staff for brand evangelists that can be the voice of your dental business. Let’s pare down unnecessary marketing ploys and figure out which ones seem to create the biggest buzz for your practice. Let’s look at how often and how responsive your posts on your Facebook Page are.
It is never too late.
It is always the right time!
